Yellow indurated limestone face inlay Yellow indurated limestone face inlay

Cf. For an example dated to the reign of Seti I carved in red jasper, see John P O'Neill, 'Égypte, Trois mille ans d'art décoratif. Musée Myers - Collection du College d'Eton', (Paris 2007), p. 58, no. 61

Provenance: Gawain McKinley collection, acquired prior to 1975

The profile head is shown looking to the left, with full lips, their edges delicately incised with an inner line, below a strong curving nose. The large eye with extended cosmetic line is set within a finely modelled brow with the eyebrow hollowed, like the eye, to be set with inlay. A large ear protrudes from above the straight edge to the neck and would been surrounded by a wig.

Possibly depicting Nefertari the wife of Ramesses II.

New Kingdom. 19th Dynasty, Ramesses II, 1279-1213 BC
Height: 3.9 cm
