Rupert Wace Ancient Art
Celtic bronze bowl Celtic bronze bowl
The inner and outer surfaces of the heavy bronze bowl are decorated all over with a punched grid-like pattern which continues over the hair of the upraised head that juts out from the rim on a broad rather flat neck. The face is concave with a protruding, noticeably square chin, the wide slit-like mouth framed by lips which run from side to side of the face. The eyes, beneath prominently arched brows, are formed of pronounced crescentic upper and lower lids surrounding protruding compressed oval eyeballs. An old label remains fixed to the inner cup, the writing now illegible but possibly two letters ending in J.
