Luristan or Amlash, Early 1st Millenium BC
Height: 7 cm
Provenance: Collection of Charles Gillet (1879-1972), thence by inheritance to Marion Schuster (1902-84), Switzerland, thence by descent
The stag stands four-square with an elongated body and a very short rounded and undefined snout. The striking feature of the otherwise simple figure are the disproportionally large many-tined antlers. The body pierced twice longitudinally through the body at the shoulder and the hindquarters for attachment or suspension.
Condition: Intact; small area of damage at the neck and hole on the rump
Literature: For similar examples see O. W. Muscarella, 'Bronze and Iron: Ancient Near Eastern Artefacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art' (New York, 1988), nos.154 and 155. Also O. W. Muscarella (ed.), 'Ancient Art, The Norbert Schimmel Collection' (Mainz, 1974), no. 148.
