Egyptian electrum Horus falcon pendant

Late Middle Kingdom, Late 12th - 17th Dynasty, c. 1850-1550 BC

Provenance: Collection of Michael O'Hara, UK acquired 1962; Private collection, London, acquired prior to 1991, and thence by descent

Formed from thin sheet metal the embossed front and flat back soldered together around the edge. The bird stands wearing the Pschent, the tall double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, with high central dome and curling wire reed. The outline of the wings, tail and leg feathers are embossed in low relief and the spaces between the feet and tail pierced. A circular hole for the eye which may have been inlaid.

Condition: Some cracking along joins between front and back plates consistent with having been buried for a long period of time

Literature: Very close parallels can be found in the Petrie Museum in London (acc. no. UC16229) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (acc. no. 13.180.2).
