Greek Geometric, 8th century BC
Height: 5 cm
Provenance: Private collection Germany, acquired London 1980s
A miniature cast bronze figure of a stylised stag standing on an openwork integral base. The creature simply depicted with four flattened legs, slender body, broad rounded tail and long neck. A small slim head topped by a pair of antlers with just one tine, the muzzle marked with four horizontal notches decreasing in size towards the snout. The neck and hindquarters decorated with impressed circles each with a central dot. Lipped edges to the underside of the thin base show it was then fitted onto a separately made element probably of wood.
Literature: Some similarities of form and decoration can be seen in the Geometric horses illustrated in J. L. Zimmermann, 'Les chevaux de dans l'art bronze géometrique grec' (1989 ) particularly Pl. 45.4b.
