Byzantine sgraffito bowl with guinea fowl

Provenance: Private collection (L.v.L.), Germany, acquired 1960s-1980s

Shallow footed, engraved slipware bowl. The sgraffito decoration depicting a finely detailed guinea fowl standing beneath arching foliage, further leaves in front and below.

Condition: some losses to slip and glaze, chips to the ring base, remains of marine encrustation.

This comes with a thermoluminescence test report from Oxford Authentication confirming its antiquity.

Literature: Examples of bowls similarly decorated with various creatures can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Acc. nos. 1971.146.1 and 2000.322). An example showing a bird of prey (acc.no.1984.302) bears comparable foliage. For a plain and undecorated example, see one now housed in the British Museum (Inv. no. 1930,0418.1).
