Made from hollow gold foil, the hoop with broad angled shoulders and narrow band of triangular section set with a circular onyx cameo of two layers, with cream on blue-grey. The device shows a sleeping dog, its body to the right, its head curled to the left with ears, eyes, and nostrils finely incised. A Greek inscription below reading, ΓΡΗΓΟΡΙ ('Be wakeful!').
Condition: Intact. Minor dents to the body of the ring, a small crack in gold foil to lower right edge of cameo. Both 'Γ's damaged.
Literature: Compare a very similar cameo set in a 19th century ring from the Content Collection; cf. M. Henig, 'The Content Cameos', Oxford and Houlton, 1990, p. 27, no. 48.
